It’s all about balance. In my experience, everything tends towards Waterfall the closer you get to the implementation, even if you’re practising strict Agile. Likewise everything tends towards Agile in the design phase until a decision is made. To recognise this is to free yourself from their limitations when applied as doctrines and to allow yourself to apply their core principles optimally: forethought and flexibility.
